Clean-Meat Kibble? This Boulder Company Says “Yes”
Doggo curious about going plant-based? Welp, she sure ain’t the only one.
We’re calling it: The biggest food trend of 2019 was Impossible Foods’ and Beyond Meat’s plant-based products that promise to make you forget about beef and chicken. So with all the hype around meatless burgers and sausages, we thought it was about doggone time our furry friends have a more animal-friendly food option as well.
Enter Bond Pet Foods, the Boulder-based company that’s hoping to disrupt the $100 billion pet food market with its “nutritious, animal-free, and protein-rich pet food.” According to PETS+ Magazine, the process involves extracting animal muscle protein genes from farm animals and combining them with microbes like yeast. The mixture is then fermented and nurtured with simple sugars, vitamins, and minerals to create the foundation for Bond’s recipes.
The company says the result is a dog food that’s “nutritionally identical to their meat counterparts without the environmental, animal welfare, and safety downsides” (#science).
After raising $1.2 million in seed funding, Bond is in the process of research and development, with its first product—a dog treat bar made with a pure yeast protein—expected to be released in early 2020.
