10 Reasons Why Cats Make Great Holiday Buddies

10 Reasons Why Cats Make Great Holiday Buddies

A lot of humans have mixed feelings about the holidays. For some, it means warm get-togethers with friends and family, sharing good food and traditions. For others, it means stress and too many things to do. Some dread those family get-togethers because it’s impossible to avoid personal issues and political discussions. And for many people, sadly, it’s a painful memory of those no longer here. All too often, the holidays fall far short of expectations.

But you know what? If you live with a cat, you have the perfect holiday buddy! When I list the following 10 reasons why, you may decide to pass on traveling in bad weather just to deal with your fractious, drunken uncle and stay home to celebrate with your kitty instead. So here goes:

  1. Cats love helping you wrap presents. Seriously! Have you ever tried to keep your cat out of room while you are giftwrapping? It sorely disappoints them. So let them help, even if it winds up taking twice as long.
  2. Cats also love helping you unwrap presents! Nobody’s happier on Christmas morning than the cat. There’s wrapping and boxes to play in, and new things to check out. They have all the joy of a 5-year-old human without the whining and shrieking.
  3. Plus cats aren’t choosy about gifts. They don’t even care whether you give them any. The box and wrapping paper are the best part anyhow.
  4. Cats don’t argue about politics with you. In fact, politics bore them.
  5. If your cat indulges in too much catnip, he won’t start an argument. At least not with you.
  6. A cat’s idea of a holiday treat is a few small pieces of turkey or ham, so they are easy to cook for. In fact, they are perfectly happy with leftovers brought home from someone else’s house.
  7. If you do decide to cook at home, your cat will be more than happy to supervise and keep you company. And they are small enough so that they don’t get in the way, at least not too much.
  8. Your cat will never judge your ugly holiday sweater.
  9. You don’t have to travel to see your cat. You can just stay home to celebrate.
  10. Your cat will be more than happy to help you take down the decorations. In fact, he may start doing that the moment you put them up.
