It’s All About the Tail
Hi everybuddy. Don’tcha just love how my floofy tail curls so nicely around my body?
Y’know…a cat’s tail is an interesting and unique thing. Here are some fun facts about a cat’s tail:
- A cat’s tail has anywhere from 19 to 23 vertebrae, and is held together by an extensive group of muscles, ligaments and tendons giving the cat amazing mobility.
- The average length of a male cat’s tail is 11 inches and for a female it’s 9 ½ inches.
- A cat’s tail helps a cat to balance. That’s one of the reasons why cats can easily walk on narrow spaces such as a fence or shelves.
- A cat can live without a tail. If the tail is badly injured requiring amputation, a cat will quickly learn to adapt to the loss.
- There are some cats that are born without tails. They’re called Manx. And they’re just as agile as cats with tails.
- The domestic cat is the only feline that can hold its tail vertically while walking. Wild cats walk with their tails either horizontally or tucked between their legs.
- Cats use their tails to communicate. You can tell how a cat is feeling just by the position of the tail. An upright tail usually means the cat is happy and confident. A tail held straight down usually means the cat is agitated or feeling aggressive. And a puffed-up tail means the cat is scared or even angry…so get out of its way!
So what’s my tail…wrapped nicely around me…saying? That I’m content and maybe even feeling a little submissive. Yeah…I’ll agree with that.
