Review: Tiny But Mighty: Kitten Lady’s Guide to Saving the Most Vulnerable Felines

We’re big fans of Kitten Lady Hannah Shaw. Since her first rescue ten years ago, Hannah has developed a huge following on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook, featuring some of the most adorable photos of kittens you’ll ever see online, but she is about so much more than just cute photos. Shaw has become the go to expert on how to save and raise orphaned kittens. In addition to teaching neonatal kitten workshops at shelters around the country, her website and YouTube channel offer a wealth of resources on kitten care.

In Tiny But Mighty, Hannah has compiled an incredible resource on kitten care. She not only explains why newborn kittens are so vulnerable and how she deals with these challenges, but she also outlines how anyone can help them. From fostering to recognizing danger signs and addressing them early to helping kittens find the purrfect forever home, this guide is packed with solid and well researched information.

The book contains multiple check lists and instructional guides as well as easy to reference charts and graphs, ranging from how to recognize and treat common feline viruses to a parasite check sheet and a “Color Wheel of Poop” that explains what a kitten’s stool color can tell you about potential health problems.

Hannah also addresses the challenges of rescuing kittens, including a chapter on dealing with compassion fatigue and burnout, something that is often neglected in rescue circles, and that may just be one of the most important chapters in the book. “Self-care is animal care,” writes Hannah. “Don’t forget that we have to feel good in order to do good.”

The information-packed sections are interspersed with personal rescue stories, including the story of Hannah’s own cat Coco, the first kitten she ever rescued.

And then there are the photos! You’d be hard pressed to find more adorable photos of kittens than the ones featured in this book. All photos are taken by super talented cat photographer Andrew Martilla or by Hannah herself.

Even if you never thought you’d consider fostering kittens, you may just want to start after reading this book. At a minimum, you’ll feel inspired to somehow get involved in changing the world for the tiniest felines. “There is no shortage of ways that individuals like me and you can get active to make the world a safer place for cats and kittens,” writes Hannah. Under the heading of “Find Your Feline Superpower,” she offers a long lists of suggestions for everyone to contribute, ranging from the obvious choices such as  donating money or volunteering at a local shelter to some you may not have thought of, such as sharing your professional expertise with a rescue group or organizing a cat food drive at your school, business or local community.

Tiny But Mighty is not just a must-have for current and future rescuers, foster parents, activists, and advocates, but a delight to read and browse through for anyone who loves cats.
