These are tough economic times for everyone, but especially for freelancers and artists like Berandette Kazmarski. I’ve admired Bernadette Kazmarski’s art for a long time. I first introduced you to this supremely talented artist ten years ago, and Bernadette and I have been friends ever since. She designed the covers for two of my books (Purrs of Wisdom and Adventures in Veterinary Medicine) and has been designing my annual Christmas cards for many years. And two years ago, a friend commissioned a very special painting of all of my cats from Bernadette.

A career launched by cats

Bernadette Kazmarski has her cats to thank for being an artist. When, as an adult, she chose to pick up a pencil and paper and put them together, it was because images of her cats kept appearing in her thoughts as pencil drawings and paintings, and she decided to draw what she was envisioning. While she renders many other subjects now, it all began with her cats and the affection she felt for each of them. “This is the gift they gave to me, and I will be forever in their debt, spending a lifetime to pay it off by sharing them with others,” she said.

She had no shortage of feline models after rescuing and fostering since the mid-1980s, including her current household of 10 rescued and formerly feral kitties inspiring her every day. “Animals give us so much in everyday life” she said, “but my cats have given me my career.”

Times have been tough for Bernadette over the past year, and the current shutdown to help stop the spread of COVID-19 is making things even harder for her. “I missed nearly all my vendor events due to hip replacement surgery last year, and lost a lot of income from that,” Bernadette explains. “My physical recovery from hip replacement was a breeze, and I looked forward to the 2020 vendor show season to arrive. It did, along with COVID-19.” All of her events into June have been cancelled, and no one is sure about the rest of the year.  So Bernadette is turning to her website to help replace her lost income from last year as well as income affected by the pandemic.
