A recent survey has found that dog owners are happier than cat owners. If you have a canine companion, you definitely won’t be surprised by this. However, the amount of mess that one little pooch can make in your home can get you down. There are the muddy paw prints, the drool, the torn-up bits of toilet roll and, of course, the dog hair. This mess can be doubly worse if you have a water-loving Labrador! Keeping your living room clean can sometimes be a bit of a challenge, but is definitely doable with these tricks.
Create a dedicated doggy area
Dogs love to have a safe and familiar space to get comfy, but this space doesn’t have to be your entire living room. Make a dedicated area for your dog with a bed, as well as keeping a special basket for their toys. If your dog is crate-trained, then you can always disguise their crate with a lightweight blanket. When you are choosing a space for your dog bed or crate, make sure that there isn’t a draught coming through — it is worth lying on the floor yourself, so you can check if there is a draught from nearby windows and doors.
Cleaning your carpets
Many dog breeds are profuse moulters all year round — this can be extremely problematic if they have thick hair, like the Samoyed. It is worth investing in a professional quality carpet cleaner that has sufficient suction to remove pet hair. This will save you money in the long term, and you don’t have to fork out money for a company to do this for you. If you have wooden or lino floor covering, then simply sweeping every day will help to clear up the pet hair, or you could even get a robot-vacuum like a Roomba to do this for you. However, bear in mind that these are tempting toys for terriers, which could be dangerous for them.
Keeping couches pristine
If you have fabric covering on your couch, put a throw over the top if you want it kept clean. You definitely can’t be precious about sofas if you let your dog sit on it with you. If you have a leather sofa, give it a regular coat of Nikwax protector to keep it looking shiny. Make sure that you don’t let your dog scratch your leather sofa, as some dogs like to dig at the material when they are nesting in to get comfortable.
The mess that a dog makes is easy enough to clear up, and in return, you will get loyalty, love, companionship and plenty of fun walkies.
