How the Assisi Loop Helped Buttercup With a Severe Eye Problem After the Camp Fire

Buttercup’s family was displaced by the devastating Camp Fire last November. While her humans struggled to recover, the 15-year-old senior was in three separate shelters. Her guardian Lisa couldn’t bring her back to her home in Paradise because there was no heat or electricity.

Buttercup’s symptoms were related to stress following the Camp Fire

Buttercup developed a severe eye infection while staying at shelters, and was brought to the Chico Hospital for Cats with extensive damage to her right eye. She had a history of eye problems caused by the feline herpes virus that were well controlled with regular administration of L-Lysine. Due to the stress of having to stay in shelters, and a lack of administration of her medications, the vision in her right eye was severely compromised.

The doctors at Chico  Hospital for Cats initially didn’t know whether they could treat the eye, or whether it might require an enucleation (removal of the eye.) Due to housing and financial concerns, Buttercups guardians were not sure they could afford treatment, but thanks to the donations the hospital received via their Camp Fire GoFundMe campaign, Buttercup was able to receive treatment.

Buttercup’s Treatment

Buttercup was treated aggressively with multiple medications including pain injections, oral pain meds, Lysine treats, eye ointments, oral antibiotics, anti-viral eye drops and autologous eye serum (Buttercup’s own blood was collected and spun down, then the serum was made into eye drops to promote healing.) She also was given a probiotic to help maintain a healthy immune system.

Once her corneal ulcer resolved, Dr. Kaarin Vekman was able to start eye drops that contained steroids to address the severe inflammation and granulation of the tissue. “With every day of treatment, we were able to note pronounced improvements with her right eye,” says Dr. Vekman.

Another important aspect of healing was to decrease Buttercup’s stress level to control further feline herpesvirus flare ups. Buttercup is a very friendly cat, and socializing with Buttercup was an important aspect in her healing process. Doctors, technicians and volunteers provided socialization and play time for her. Frequent visits from Lisa and her family also helped keep Buttercup’s spirits up.

Using the Assisi Loop for Buttercup

In addition to all her other treatments, Buttercup also received regular treatments with the Assisi Loop Lounge. “The pad is small enough to fit into our enclosures so the cats can lay on it,” says Dr. Elizabeth Colleran. “Its value is the ‘barrel-shaped’ energy delivery that is 10 centimeters (about  4 inches) in diameter.” Chico Cat Hospital routinely uses the Loop for dentistries, abscess repairs, spay surgeries, and more. “We have integrated the Loop into all of our multi-modal pain management protocols in the hospital,” says Dr. Colleran.

Buttercup made a full recovery and is happy and safe at home with her family now.

“She loves to nap with the dogs and the other cats,” said Lisa. All of Lisa’s furry family members are doing well. “It’s like once we all, including the animals, got back home, life went right back to normal for them.”
