Special Dog Seeks Special Home: Gomer the Hippo

This series is dedicated to local pups having a harder time finding their forever homes, whether it be due to age, physical impairments, or just needing a little extra attention. We could all use a friend rn, so we’re spreadin’ the woof about this special somepawdy.

Adopt Gomer from Animal Ark

Name: Gomer

Stats: 11-year-old, 75-lb American Bully mix boi

Location: Twin Cities

Rescue: Animal Ark

Sidewalk Dog: Um, wow! Is he even real? Tell us about Gomer!

Adoptable Gomer, an American Bulldog mix, laying down with a bowl of water

Animal Ark: He’s an amazing friend all around! He can cuddle on the couch, is a great companion for walks, and is absolutely oozing personality. Gomer has energy to go on walks summer or winter, is funny, and does a great job of playing tug safely. He really has great energy for an older dog and even still jumps up occasionally on people out of clear blue. Gomer is also the hippo of the kiddie pool, where he just loves to splash and play.

SWD: He really *is* a majestic hippo! What are Gomer’s special needs?

AA: Gomer was overlooked for a long time and then was adopted by a family with kids. Then COVID-19 came along, and his mom lost her job and was forced to make changes that could not include Gomer. Fortunately, the Animal Ark takes their dogs back. So now Gomer is looking for a foster or a forever home!

SWD: H*ckin COVID, man. Well, let’s get this boi ‘dopted! What else is he into?

AA: He loves sniffing, playing tug and going for walks. Gomer enjoys walking in the cold (seriously!) and pushes his people to be the best they can be. He actually encourages his humans to go farther on walks—and who doesn’t need that kind of pawsitivity in their life?

SWD: What type of home would be a perfect match for Gomer?

AA: Gomer needs to be the only dog so he can have you all to himself. He loves kids and could be a fit for a home with children older than 4 or 5. Gomer isn’t a match for cats, has a prey drive for snakes and squirrels, and needs parents that will remind him not to jump. But this kid is very trainable with patience and is super gentle taking treats!
