Spooky season is upon us, witches. Crowding in haunted houses or dancing the monster mash with all your pals are big faux-paws this year. How about a self-guided tour of haunted places in the Twin Cities with your doggo instead? Leash up pup and wander these Twin Cities haunts for a ghoulish good time. Don’t worry—your big bad wolf’ll protect you.
If you prefer a guided spook, check out American Ghost Walks for tours of Stillwater, Saint Paul, and Minneapolis. Unfortunately doo to insurance reasons (BORING), dogs have to stay home.
Schmidt Brewery
Before becoming Schmidt Artist Lofts and Keg and Case Market, the Schmidt Brewery housed many frights. Start with Jacob Schmidt himself, who was detained by police (though never charged) for shooting pigeon hunters behind the brewery. Then during Prohibition (which they survived by making NA beverages), the son of a brewery owner was kidnapped by a gang and held for ransom. But most the reported hauntings stem from brewery workers dying a number of ways, including in an explosion and falling down an elevator shaft.
Walk the grounds to see if you experience any eerie feelings or hear spooky sounds. And if the paranormal activity chills ya to the bone, go enjoy food and drinks on the Keg and Case patio instead.
Saint Anthony Main
A historical landmark in Minneapolis, Saint Anthony Main provides a step back in time on its cobblestone street in Northeast Minne. But like much of our history, we must recognize and reconcile with the painful parts. In the 1950s and 1960s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed two sets of locks at the lower end of Saint Anthony Falls, which destroyed Spirit Island—a Native American burial ground. Ghost hunters report paranormal activity in this space beneath the Hennepin and Third Avenue bridges.
Take a haunted dog-friendly hike through nearby Father Hennepin State Park. Frights aside, the neighborhood offers lots to sniff, including the dog-friendly patio at Psycho Suzi’s Motor Lounge, currently available by reservation only.
Hamline University
Minnesota’s oldest university is so haunted, they even added a Haunted Hamline page to their website. Mask up and let doggo walk you around the campus grounds. Be respectful, as classes are in session. The paranormal hot spots include Manor Hall, Drew Hall, and Old Main.
Once you’re done listening for things that go bump in the day or night, pop over to Groundswell for patio seating or a cupcake and cup of joe to go, or enjoy a gluten-free beer at Burning Brothers Brewery.
