How to Create Your Own Dog Obstacle Course at Home

As the UK currently finds itself in a peculiar situation with us all being told to stay at home to prevent COVID-19 from spreading, our dogs must be left wondering why their owners are around the home a lot more than usual. Not only has their daily routine been disrupted, but they’re probably spending less time going out for walks too. 

If you’re struggling to find ways to keep your pooch exercised and entertained, then look no further. We’ve got some fun ways to make sure your furry friend stays in shape whilst beating the boredom!

Chances are you have plenty of items around your home that can easily be used or transformed into a dog obstacle course. Whether you have a garden or not, it’s time to get creative with your thinking. Keep in mind your dog’s capability and safety when it comes to creating obstacles for them.

What household items can you use?

If you have kids you’ll likely have things like children’s play tunnels, hula hoops or even small cones that they use for football practice. These all make great objects for a dog obstacle course. The cones can be used to help your dog weave in and out, then have them run through the tunnel and maybe finish by jumping through the hoop. 

Don’t worry if you don’t have children’s toys laying around – there are still plenty of items you can use. If you have PVC pipes you can use these to create a weave obstacle, or if you want to create a tunnel you can also use some old cardboard boxes. Try to make the boxes as sturdy as possible so they don’t collapse when your dog runs through. You can even use small laundry baskets and curtain rods to create a mini jump for your pooch. 

Remember this is a fun way for your dog to release all that built-up energy, and if they manage to learn a new trick reward them with a treat. Even if you don’t have a big enough space for your dog to run around and enjoy a big obstacle course, you can try incorporating different elements to ensure your dog is still getting plenty of exercise while having a fun time.
