Your Dog’s Spring Forward Guide For 2020

Trina

I love Spring, the weather is perfect for getting out of the house and spending time outdoors with your dog. The weather is not to hot for long walks and not too cold that your freezing at the dog park.

That’s why when it’s time to Spring the clock ahead, it’s great to get your dog bouncing for joy and ready for warmer days.

It’s important to make sure your dog gets ready for the shift in temperature, and ready for the Springtime outdoor activities. Check out my guide so that both of you are ready to spring forward!

Spring Clean

First, thing first is to scrub out all that winter dead hair with a good brushing and bath. I recommend a good set of tools that are perfect for your dog’s breed. A slicker brush is great for shaggy coats and combs will help get those knots out for silky breeds.

Also investing in a quality dog bathing tub can really make your life easier when it comes to getting the job done quickly and easily.

Don’t forget to clip those long nails and teeth cleaning. My dog’s annual check-up is usually in Spring, so besides checking that all her jabs are up to date, I will ask my vet to check to make sure her teeth are okay as well.

Protect

Now is the time to make sure that your dog’s protection is up to date so that those pesky bugs, like fleas and ticks, are not going to find a home on your dog.

A Special repellant collar or medication will do the trick and keep your dog protected. Remember too, that when you are outdoors with Fido, that you keep him away from some plants and fertilizer that could be toxic to him.

Thankfully, your dog will no longer need his winter coat to keep him warm, but he will still need a light and waterproof raincoat for the Spring showers. Make sure it’s easy for him to run and play, and that it’s breezy enough so that he does not get overheated.

New toys

Now that you will be spending more time outdoors, this is a great time to find something fun that you both would love. My favourite is playing tug of war with my pup, it’s a great way to bond and it always makes me laugh when I see her shake her head with the determination of pulling me off my feet. I usually buy a few, a good quality rope toy shouldn’t cost too much and they also make a great chew toy too. Don’t forget to pick up a few throw balls, so that your dog can hone her skills of retrieving and return.

If tossing a ball until your arm falls off is not your idea of fun, why not try an automatic ball launcher a great idea, especially if your dog needs a little more exercise to shed those winter pounds.

This is also the time I like to freshen up my dog’s toys, throwing out the ragged and torn, and washing the rubber toys in a mixture of water and vinegar and tossing the rest in the wash.

Home

With all those activities, your dog is going to all pooped out after a muddy Spring day in the park. I recommend grabbing a great dog towel that you can keep in the car or by the door to rub off the mud.

Freshen up his bedding and blankets with a good wash, or better yet why not try an Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed for the ultimate comfort for your pooch!

With the days getting longer and warmer, and with your dog all set to enjoy the season all that left is some tasty treats!
