Uplift the Underdog: Cat Edition Contest by Petcurean

Hello, and Happy Friday! I've got a very exciting contest to tell you about today! It's a contest that will benefit shelter cats! And you know, helping shelter cats is part of our mission.

Petcurean, a premium cat and dog food manufacturer, is continuing its company's mission of putting pets first. How are they doing this? Well, by announcing the return of their "Uplift the Underdog: Cat Edition" contest. Like previous editions, the intention of this contest is to shine a light on the thousands of deserving animals who are overlooked for adoption because of health, age, behavior and other issues – the “underdogs”. From today until February 2, 2020, Petcurean invites rescue groups, shelters and all supporters across North America to get involved and help these deserving cats find loving homes to live out the rest of their lives. Please note, a separate version of this contest will be running in Quebec.

According to the American Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 3.2 million cats are taken into shelters across the United States each year. While 1.6 million are adopted each year, 860,000 are euthanized. North of the border, Humane Canada estimates that approximately 81,000 cats were taken into shelters in 2018, and approximately 62 percent of cats in shelters ultimately got adopted. When you consider these measures do not include thousands of non-member organizations in both countries, the number of cats who desperately need help becomes much more apparent.

“Every day, thousands of cats are taken into shelters across the United States and Canada, and, sadly, many of them will ultimately be euthanized because they are perceived as 'too hard to adopt' because of their age, health or some other type of perceived imperfection,” said Christine Mallier, PR & Community Relations Manager at Petcurean. “If just one cat is able to find their forever family because of the attention raised by 'Uplift the Underdog: Cat Edition', we will view the campaign as a success. By working together, and doing whatever each of us is able, it’s our sincere belief that we have the power to help these cats, with their amazing hearts and spirits, find the forever homes they deserve.”

Let me tell you what we love best about this contest. It focuses on cats who were overlooked last year, but are totally adoptable. You know, the ones that are often overlooked due to their age, temperament, health, or other things that make people think they are unadoptable. That's silly, I know. I mean, look at me! I was really sick, but that didn't stop Mommy from adopting me.

So how do you enter? Here are the details!

  • From now until February 2, rescue groups and shelters in the US and Canada are invited to visit www.uplifttheunderdog.com to submit the details of their most overlooked but highly deserving cats.
  • Of the cats nominated, 6 finalists will be chosen in the US and 6 more in Canada for a total of 12 finalists!
  • Starting February 12, the public will then be invited to learn about the finalists at www.uplifttheunderdog.com where they can vote for the cat they most want to help get adopted.
  • The public voting period will last until February 24, at 6:00 pm P.S.T. The winner will be announced on February 25.

I'm so excited!

What's in it for the finalists? Well, let me tell you! All 12 of the finalists’ shelters/rescue centers will receive a cat food donation from Petcurean of 2,000 meals to support the important work they’re doing to help animals in their communities. Petcurean will also pay the adoption fee for all 12 finalists, and if they are adopted, they will receive one year’s supply of food to take to their new homes.  How cool is that? But that's not all. The top nominees in both the US and Canada will also receive a three-year supply of food from Petcurean.

Petcurean hopes that the campaign will help raise awareness of these "underdog cats" on the broadest scale possible. We hope our readers will nominate shelter cats they know and will spread the word about the contest. We're going to nominate a cat, or maybe even two!

Do you have a cat you want to nominate? Tell us about them in the comments!
