An Incantation of Cats  is the second book in Clea Simon’s Witch Cats of Cambridge series – and how adorable is this cover! This series mixes mystery with a touch of the paranormal and a little romance, and the combination is irresistible.

Protagonist Becca, an unemployed librarian and fledgling witch detective, gets two new cases from people within her magical community on the same day, and is excited to get to work. Little does she know that her three cats, Harriett, Laurel and Clara, are the ones with the real powers. The cats immediately sense that something is wrong with both clients. But not even Clara, the calico who is most in tune with her person, knows how to help Becca. The three cats must learn to set aside their differences and work together to save their human.

As is the case with all of Clea’s books, her trademark descriptive writing style drew me in from the very first page. She excels at writing both human and feline characters that you just can’t help but fall in love with. Her protagonist is likeable if a bit ditzy, the cats are delightful, and I found myself getting frustrated right along with them as they try to keep their human out of trouble.

The plot features lots of twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages as the cat and their human try to solve the mystery. In this installment, Clea takes us deeper into the magical world of the three feline witches. The fact that the cats can’t let their human know that they are witches only adds to the appeal.

If you enjoy feline-centric mysteries, fantasy, and a touch of magic and romance, you will love this series.
