Special Dog Seeks Special Home: Santana the Chihuahua

Inspired by our founder Ali Jarvis’ “lemon” dog, Luc, this series is dedicated to local, special-needs pups looking for loving homes. This adoptable pooch is scooped up and brought to you by Dog Days in St. Paul and Metro Dogs in the North Loop. See why they’re so grrreat at the end of this story.

Name: Santana

Stats: 10-year-old, 8-pound Chihuahua

Location: Twin Cities

Rescue: Underdog Rescue

Sidewalk Dog: Look at that tiny fox! Tell us about Santana.

Eight pounds and two of ’em are his ears.

Underdog Rescue: Santana currently has the distinction of being the adoptable dog that has been with Underdog Rescue the longest. He was rescued on April 21, 2016, and he’s still looking for his forever home!

SWD: Awww, poor pupper! What are his special needs?

UR: It takes Santana a very long time to warm up to people. That means that he doesn’t do very well when meeting potential adopters. He needs someone who can see the potential inside him.

SWD: Sounds like Santana needs a patient fox-dog pawrent to gain his trust.

UR: Exactly. As his foster, I love seeing him get a tiny bit better every day. To watch him stop, think about it, and screw up his courage to get close to us, is so endearing (and a little heartbreaking). Santana is truly adorable, he has the cutest little fox face, and of course his little tongue hanging out. He loves chewing on Nylabones, hiding in his dog cave (the end table next to the couch with a dog bed in it), and eating. This guy lives for the noms, especially carrots. He also enjoys having a really good stretch where he shoots his back legs out straight behind him one at a time.

SWD: Oh fur cute! So what else would make a pawesome forever home for Santana?

UR: Santana would love to find a canine companion or two. He needs another dog to help him gain confidence and trust people. An older, dog-savvy child would be OK, especially if they understood that they need to let Santana come to them on his own terms. He needs a home that’ll patiently work with him in very small steps to help him overcome his fears and get comfortable.
