My Top 10 Cat Books of 2018

I don’t keep track of the number of books I read each year, but my best guess is somewhere between 150 and 200, and at least half of them have something to do with cats. I review books here on The Conscious Cat almost every week. That’s a lot of books!
I made a commitment to myself long ago that I would never post a bad book review. I feel that every author pours his or her heart and soul into a book, and just because I don’t like a book doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a good book. As a result, if you see a book reviewed here on the site, it means that I really liked it. This makes it challenging each year to pick only ten favorites.
Here are my ten favorites for this year, in no particular order.
A Spell of Murder
The first book in Clea Simon’s new Witch Cats of Cambridge series mixes mystery with a touch of the paranormal and a little romance, and the combination is irresistible. A Spell of Murder is available from Amazon.
My Life in a Cat House
This collection of humorous and heartwarming short stories about the ongoing adventures of Gwen Cooper’s feline family is a treat for the cat lover’s soul. My Life in a Cat House is available from Amazon.
Cats on Catnip
This gorgeous book features photos by Andrew Marttila, self-proclaimed crazy cat man and one of the most talented cat photographers I ever met. Andrew captures the full range of cats’ reactions to catnip in stunning photographs. Cats on Catnip is available from Amazon.
Confessions of an Angel Cat
What if cats were sent on missions to fix broken human lives? What if, once they’ve successfully accomplished their missions, they establish a “heart lock” with a human, a bond so strong that it will last forever? And what if there is no such thing as linear time at the Rainbow Bridge? “No waiting, no sense of missing someone, no broken hearts.” This is the premise of this entertaining and heartwarming novel. Confessions of an Angel Cat is available from Amazon.
Weather Menders
This Cli-Fi novel about reversing climate change through time travel, featuring a time-traveling cat, had me spellbound as it took me to exotic locations around the world. It’s also a sobering look at a what our future may look like if we don’t wake up and change how we treat the planet. Ultimately, this book is a timeless love story – of love between humans, and of humanity’s love for planet Earth. Weather Menders is available from Amazon.
The Allergic Pet
Allergies are an extreme reaction of the immune system to common substances in a cat’s every day environment. Feline allergies can be a frustrating problem for cat parents and veterinarians because they can be very challenging to diagnose correctly. Conventional treatments are often palliative at best, and sometimes aggravate the problem in the long run. In The Allergic Pet, holistic veterinarian Deva Khalsa, VMD, takes an indepth look at pet allergies. The Allergic Pet is available from Amazon.
Hello,My Name is Bunny!
This is the first time I’m including a childrens’ book on my 10 best books list. Aimed at ages 2 to 6, the story of Bunny and her friends and their adventures in New York City captured my heart. Hello, My Name is Bunny! is available from Amazon.
Choosing to Be
This book takes the reader on a fascinating, sometimes challenging, sometimes humorous journey as we follow the author from depression to the clarity of the Buddha mind, with the assistance of the wise Poohbear and kitten Catzenbear, who may not have the older cat’s wisdom, but who teaches Tansey by simply being a kitten. Beautifully written and sometimes almost painfully honest, this book makes the case for why it’s so important to simply be rather than continuously do. Choosing to Be is available from Amazon.
Emma’s Gift
This heart touching memoir is a celebration of the eternal bond between cats and humans that will resonate with anyone who has ever had a special cat in their life. Emma encouraged Mayfield on her journey of self-discovery, helping her work through healing old wounds and reconnecting with her authentic self. Emma’s Gift is available from Amazon.
Death on the Menu
Cats, a tropical setting, mouth-watering food (with some recipes included), and did I mention cats? Lucy Burdette’s Key West Food Critic mystery series has all the right ingredients for a delightful read. Death on the Menu is available from Amazon.
I’ll announce my choice for best cat book of 2018 next Friday.
