For my entire life, books have been an integral part of my Christmas traditions and memories. Even before I could read, Santa would always leave a book or two under the tree for me, and I have beautiful memories of sitting in my mom or dad’s lap as they read the books to me. Later memories find me curled up by the tree with my new books. To this day, one of the things I do every Christmas is to treat myself to a special book to enjoy sitting by the tree.

And while I make time every day to read at least for a little while, there’s just something about the slower time between the years that lends itself to longer reading sessions. May I suggest the following books for your holiday reading pleasure (or perhaps, as last minute gifts and stocking stuffers for the cat lovers on your list?)

If your taste runs to heartwarming stories, The Christmas Cat is for you. After years abroad, Garrison Brown returns home to Vancouver to build a new life. When his beloved grandmother passes away a few weeks before Christmas, Garrison goes to her house to sort out her belongings, including six cats who need new homes. While Garrison hopes to dispense with the task quickly, his grandmother’s instructions don’t allow for speed. She has left Garrison with some challenging requirements for the future homes of her furry friends–plus a sizeable monetary gift for the new owners. Garrison’s job is to match the cats with the right owners without disclosing the surprise gift. Along the way, he may just meet someone who can make him stay.

For fans of Homer the Blind Wondercat (and who isn’t!), Gwen Cooper’s Homer and the Holiday Miracle features a story which will resonate with anyone who has ever had a cat fall ill during the holidays. Two weeks before Christmas, Homer was diagnosed with liver disease. His lab values were so high that his doctors didn’t even understand how he was still alive. They told Gwen that most likely, he wouldn’t even make it to Christmas. But, true to the miracle cat that Homer was for his entire life, he not only made it to Christmas, he lived for another nine months.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries, Miranda James’ latest in her Cats in the Stacks series, Six Cats a ‘Slayin, is for you. Librarian Charlie Harris finds a box of five kittens on his doorstep. With the help of his Maine Coon Diesel, Charlie cares for the kittens just as his nosy real estate agent neighbor, who has designs on Charlie’s home, throws a lavish holiday party. When Gerry ends up dead at her own party, Charlie and Diesel must solve the mystery before the holiday season is ruined.

And of course, no cat Christmas reading list would be complete without the classic The Cat Who Came for Christmas. I reread this book ever year around the holidays, and even though it was originally published in 1987, it has lost none of its charm.
