About 6 months ago, I started researching natural human beds – those made without toxic chemicals – and in that research, I started thinking about cat beds – and what they are made from and out of. Several years ago, I reviewed a cat tree that had various cubby areas on it – and those cubby areas had a memory foam pad that went inside. It wasn’t until a reader told me that memory foam was loaded with toxic chemicals that I became more aware of what cat products consist of. However, what really brought it home was an interview I did with holistic vet, Dr. Jean Hofve. We were discussing feline hyperthyroidism. One of the questions I asked was what caused feline hyperthyroidism. She said it wasn’t for sure, but there was some hypotheses out about it possibly being the fire retardants we use in carpets – how cats lay on them every day – day in and day out. And I connected again about what our cats are exposed to that we don’t think about – those things beyond their food, but that are still in their environment. And the same goes for us – canary in a coal mine – if the cat is affected by it, we will be too, eventually.
Several days and hours of Internet searches eventually led me to Brentwood Home, a company in California that uses non-toxic materials that are safe for your home and everyone in it.
I reached out to them to see if they would be willing to send me a bed to review. They were game, so lucky us. They have two pet beds: The Runyon and The Griffith.
I chose the Runyon because it has a bolster on three sides, whereas The Griffith is just a flat bed.
It arrives at your door rolled up & compressed, wrapped with plastic in a long box. You can see what I mean in our unboxing arrival video of the bed below.

The Runyon Pet Bed is handcrafted to order in their California factory using CertiPUR-US certified foams that are safe to sleep on (and chew on, if they must).
It’s made of high quality furniture-grade fabric that has lock-stitching, so that it can hold up against scratching, tug-of-war and more. As you can see in our final review video, the quilted cover is removable and machine washable, and two layers of supportive foam are protected by a waterproof liner for easy cleanup. It has a soft microfiber cover with a non-slip bottom that keeps the bed in place.
The base of the bed is 4-inches: 2-inches of gel infused memory foam and 2-inches of orthopedic base foam. My choice to get the Runyon with the bolster was spot on, as the cats like to use it as a comfortable head rest and comfort.
It’s resistant to mold, bacteria and dust mites and has 3-Year Warranty.
It comes in 3 different colors and several different sizes – small, medium, large and extra large. We received the small in Mocha. It measures 18 x 22 x 10 inches and weighs 7 lbs.

As you might have seen on our social media – particularly Facebook and Instagram, the cats love this bed – it will be one of the products that we review that we will keep for some time, I’d imagine. I was really surprised to see Charlie using it as much as he did. I am also pretty sure he slept on it at night too. I am really impressed with this bed – and while it costs more than other pet beds (it’s about $150), it’s worth the extra cost of the peace of mind that your kitty is sleeping on something safe and that you can easily wash the cover and replace it for years to come.
