Teresa, one of our readers, told me about Caru – we e-mail often about cat food, so I was excited to try it. I trust Teresa’s suggestions because she reads up on cat food ingredients, where they are sourced, etc. more than I have the time to do so. She is also an avid follower of the Truth About Pet Food – a website run by Susan Thixton, a pet advocate that looks out for pets and their owners when it comes to the pet food industry.
Caru was featured in the Truth About Pet Food’s The List 2019 – which is a very difficult list to make if you are a pet food manufacturer.
I reached out to Caru to see if we could get some food to try out. They said they could send us 12 boxes of their food. Yes, that’s right, their food comes in boxes, not cans. The boxes are very similar to those ones that chicken stock, veggie stock, etc come in now – but on a smaller scale.

Caru is made from 100% human grade ingredients (no ingredients from China) and prepared in a human food plant in the USA. I like that every recipe has real meat, poultry or fish as the first ingredient and doesn’t contain any GMO ingredients, grain, wheat, gluten, corn, soy or animal by-products or preservatives, artificial flavors or colors.
Caru says that these stews are complete and balanced for all life stages so they can be fed to cats and kittens every day.
What I really liked about Caru was that they have limited ingredient diets – which my sister really struggles with finding for her cat, Addie, who has a gastrointestinal disease that requires she be on a limited diet.
The boxes the food can in was definitely the biggest difference – they are easy to open and serve – not quite as easy to open as a can, but easy enough. I like that the packaging is BPA-free , and that they are made from recyclable, eco-friendly, renewable materials, which is good for our planet.
As you can see in our final review video, my Ragdoll cats, Charlie and Trigg, were not huge fans of any of the flavors – they would lick them, a bit but not come close to finishing them. My sister’s Ragdoll cats, Addie and Ash, however, loved the Turkey one (the only one that we were sent to try that Addie could have), and my sister has already bought a case of the food to continue to feed them. She is super excited to have a new food in their rotation of foods – especially being on such a limited ingredient regime.

I love it when companies are smart enough to offer a sample pack – goodness knows, cat owners can’t buy a full case of food without knowing if their cats like it.
