Special Dog Seeks Special Home: Sprout the Toy Poodle

Inspired by our founder Ali Jarvis’ “lemon” dog, Luc, this series is dedicated to local, special-needs pups looking for loving homes. This adoptable pooch is scooped up and brought to you by Dog Days in St. Paul and Metro Dogs in the North Loop. See why they’re so grrreat at the end of this story.

Name: Sprout

Stats: 10-year-old, 7-pound Toy Poodle

Location: Twin Cities

Rescue: Secondhand Hounds

Cuddle level: expert.

Sidewalk Dog: Just look at that adorable lady pup! Tell us about Sprout.

Secondhand Hounds: Sprout came from a shelter in Texas. She LOVES people and cuddling, and will sit on someone’s lap for a long as they’ll let her. She also adores short, 10-15-minute walks and gets super excited when she knows it’s walk time!

SWD: Love it! What are her special needs?

SHH: Sprout is blind, but she is extremely smart and has been learning the layout of her foster home very quickly. She also has a collapsing trachea, which is common for toy breeds, and so she wears a harness instead of a collar on walks to protect her trachea.

SWD: Sounds like Sprout just needs a home that’ll give her little extra TLC!

SHH: Exactly! Sprout needs a family who will be gentle and attentive to her needs. She does best on a regular potty schedule, because she doesn’t give a signal when she needs to go out. She lives for people, snuggles, and walks. She does a little dance if you ask her if she wants to go for a walk!

SWD: Oh fur cute! So what else would make the perfect forever home for Sprout?

SHH: Sprout is fearful of large, energetic dogs, and prefers a quiet environment. She tolerates cats and other dogs but doesn’t interact with them, and so she’d love to be in a home where she’s the only dog, or a home with other senior pets. Her forever home could include children, cats, and dogs, as long as they’re calm and gentle with her.
