Common and Not So Common Dental Problems in Cats
Dental disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for cats. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, an astounding 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3. The inflammation and infection associated with periodontal disease can lead to damage to other organs such as the heart, kidney and liver, and lead to other serious health problems. Dental disease can also be an indicator of immune system disorders.
Cats rarely show symptoms of dental disease until it is in its advanced stages.
Being able to recognize dental problems early is critical to get your cat help before she experiences pain. The longer you wait, the more complicated (and costly) treatment will be.
Two of the most common dental problems in cats are periodontal disease and gingivitis.
Dr. James Anthony, BSc(Agr), DVM, MRCVS, FAVD, DAVDC, DEVDC, Pag, a boarded veterinary dentist with over 30 years of experience, provides in depth information about other dental conditions that owners should be aware of, such as:
- tooth fractures
- tooth root abscesses
- resorptive lesions.

About Dr. Anthony
If Dr. Anthony’s name sounds familiar to some of you, it’s because you may have seen me mention him in connection with 1TDC™, a 4-in-1 wellness solution that has beneficial effects on periodontal and joint, skin and coat health as well as overall stamina. Dr. Anthony conducted a a double blind periodontal health study with cats at The University of Saskatchewan. The results were published in The Journal of Periodontology in 2007 and 2009. His research demonstrated positive results beyond the studies published in the journal. “I was amazed at the positive results from the use of the 1TDC™ technology,” said Dr. Anthony, BSc(Agr), DVM, MRCVS, FAVD, DAVDC, DEVDC, Pag. “All periodontal measurements in the test animals improved significantly. The more I use the 1TDC™ technology, the more impressed I am.”
I don’t use the term “miracle” lightly, but 1TDC deserves to be called a miracle supplement. Click here for more information.
