5 Dog-Approved New Year’s Resolutions

We’re on (paddle)board with these 2019 goals.

At the beginning of a new year, it’s common to jot down some resolutions for yourself—but what about for your pup? Start 2019 on the right paw with these dog-approved goals that’ll challenge both your minds, satisfy your adventure cravings, and strengthen your bond. We predict a doggone amazing year!

Learn a new skill. It’s science: old dogs can learn new tricks. Classes give your dog a confidence boost, provide an opportunity for socialization, and also strengthen the bond you have with your four-legged friend. Brush up on basic commands, or if you’re ready to take training to the next level, opt for an agility class complete with tunnels, poles, and tires.

Get in shape. Taking steps to be healthier in the new year doesn’t have to be a solo activity. Letting your dog in on the fun can make exercise puppin’ delightful. Wanna increase flexibility and mindfulness? Try doga (yoga with your dog). Looking for something a little more high-energy? Paddle boarding or kayaking might be for you. There are even puppy-and-person Pilates classes to up your strength.

Plan a trip. Putting a road trip or two on the calendar is the perfect cure for a case of wanderlust. Whether it’s hiking in New York’s Catskills (it’s OK, pups, you’re unlikely to encounter any actual cats while you’re there) or soaking up some California rays and waves, there’s no need to leave Spot behind with the abundance of hotels that now cater to furry family members in virtually every destination. A few to check out: Radisson RED and Home2Suites by Hilton.

Practice self-care. You’re not the only one who needs some TLC after the hectic holiday season. There are plenty of doggie spas that go beyond the typical coat-brushing and nail-trimming to treat Fido to a muscle-relaxing massage, a hydrating mud bath, or a pawdicure. Better yet, find a spa that’ll pamper you both. A “mommy-and-me” couples’ massage, perhaps? (No joke, this exists!)

Do good for your community. The American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen program is “the gold standard” when it comes to well-behaved pooches. Any dog is welcome to participate in the test, which includes items like accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, responses to other dogs and distractions, and coming when called. It’s all part of the organization’s mission: “Responsible Owners, Well-Mannered Dogs.” Once your pup is CGC-certified, he or she will be ready to tackle additional challenges, like therapy-dog training.
